Career Pathing

Career Pathing

Career paths and career ladders give employees a clearer view of how they can advance and grow within the organization. They support workforce planning and succession planning by showing where employees can move, which roles need stronger talent pipelines, and where future capability gaps may emerge. When connected to performance management, documented feedback and demonstrated competencies help employees understand what they must achieve before moving into the next role or level.

JER HR Group has developed hundreds of career path models for clients nationwide using a defined process designed to provide in-depth analysis and practical solutions. Career pathing is one component of job architecture. It defines the knowledge, skills, experience, job levels, and movement options required for employees to progress within and across job families. Clear job descriptions document the responsibilities, qualifications, competencies, and progression expectations for each role so employees and managers understand what advancement requires.

Career Development

Our Approach

Our approach typically includes:

  • A Review of "Job Families", which includes developing career progression across functional areas.
  • Determination of Key Success Factors (KSF) and Proficiency Levels, which includes identification of gaps and development of plans to overcome identified gaps through education or the development of specific skills.
  • Development of an Employee Talent Profile Model, This process includes developing a consistent, reliable methodology and matrix for assessing individual employees' talents and competencies against job profiles.
  • Development of a Progression of Duties chart for each position, documenting the requirements for a position and key attributes for progression. This model is helpful in developing both short-term and long-term career paths.
  • Creation of a Career Path Communication Plan, which assists HR in developing and communicating Career Path models. We develop a communication strategy, design a communication approach, and implement the program model.
