Leveraging Our Approach to Change for Success
While the subject of Change is broad and deep, it is important to understand that our approach to change impacts the way we address it. This is important knowledge for us as leaders in our organizations, in our civic endeavors and even in our own homes. By understanding how we tend to approach change, we can be more effective participants, team members, and leaders in various areas of life.
We all approach change differently. Some of us run towards it, seek it out, crave it. Others of us avoid it like the plague. Still others roll with it, take things as they come. There is no right way or wrong way to approach change. Additionally, we may react differently depending on the circumstances. However, we all tend to have our “go-to” response and that’s what is important to recognize.
Whether change is invigorating or challenging, it is constant. We all face change at some time or another. It is important to remember when going through change, that the benefits are many. They can include growth, new knowledge, a fresh start, and even the opportunity to test our limits and to appreciate our resilience. Change can also feel unsettling, bringing the unexpected and consequently, a lack of control. When we know how we tend to approach change, we can help ourselves and others navigate it more effectively for success.
How do our different approaches unfold in the workplace? Often, the result includes misunderstandings, conflict and wasted time and energy. Our visionaries feel as if those who are hesitant are slowing down the process, whereas the implementors need time to process and to adjust to the changes at hand. When we consider the various styles, it is easy to see why it can be hard to navigate change in the workplace! At the same time, we need various perspectives in our organizations to be most successful.
So what can we do? First, we can become aware of our own personal preferences and realize that we all take different approaches to change. Second, when helping others navigate change, speak with someone who has a different approach to change than your own. Third, consider your audience and the various approaches to change and frame your communication accordingly.
Having this knowledge of your team members and their approaches to change can help you communicate more effectively and consequently, navigate change more successfully.
Effective leadership means being self-aware regarding our own leadership skills and preferences. Our approach to change has a significant impact on our teams. How do you approach change? How do those you lead approach change? Learning our approaches to change helps us to leverage our various styles for success!
